A dream come true, BARÓN DE LEY is a winery which was devised and founded in 1985 by a small group of prestigious Rioja professionals which decided to create a project which was unique at that time in the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja: a winery modelled on the Médoc châteaux, bringing together all the conditions that make a wine a work of art. With this objective, the creators of BARÓN DE LEY acquired the Imas estate, within the boundaries of Mendavia and on the left bank of the River Ebro. It is an exceptional place for growing vines due to its climatic conditions and the characteristics of its soils, on which 90 hectares of vines were planted. The estate also included the XVI th century Benedictine monastery which is today BARÓN DE LEY's headquarters and an ideal setting for historical and cultural events. This setup was completed with the construction of the winery in the second half of the 1980's. The winery was built using noble materials (wood from Oregon pine, handmade bricks, etc.) and designed for making Reservas and Grandes Reservas of the highest quality, incorporating the latest technology. It forms a beautiful architectural complex with the old monastery, the two buildings representing the harmonious symbiosis between tradition and modernity which characterises Barón de Ley's wines.
