Description
bold & opulent
The spectacular wine is a clear example of why Chile is called a viticultural paradise. All the winegrowing regions received plenty of rain in winter and early spring. In the Aconcagua Valley, the growing season started out cool and vigorous, until conditions took a dramatic turn when a heat wave hit at the onset of veraison. It was warm and dry from there on out, with occasional morning fog to ease the summer heat. The fruit ripened slowly despite the heat. With no threat of rain whatsoever throughout the ripening period, we were able to let the fruit hang while we waited for ripe flavours. Our Merlot vineyards in this region produced good colour, jammy flavours and lower tannins than past vintages.
V I N E YA R D : The Max Reserva Merlot is from Sector IV of the Don Maximiano Estate in the Aconcagua Valley, a semi-desert region with hot summer days and cooling afternoon breezes. The Merlot vineyard was planted in 1992 with 100% true Merlot clones. The rows were given a north-south orientation to maximize sun exposure. The soil is a loamy clay with a rocky subsoil that ensures excellent drainage. The vineyard features drip irrigation, high-density planting and a vertical trellising system.
W I N E M A K I N G : The Merlot vineyard was hand harvested in mid- to late March. The fruit underwent whole-berry fermentation at 1628° Celsius, followed by an extended maceration. The length of the maceration period varied depending on the development of the lots, averaging just over two weeks but in some cases stretching to 20 days. The wine aged for fourteen months in 51% French and 49% American oak barrels (91% new). Clarification occurred naturally as the wine settled during ageing; it was then only lightly filtered at bottling.
W I N E M A K E R S C O M M E N T S : The Max Reserva Merlot is a medium-bodied wine with rich layers of ripe fruit. The intense cherry, raspberry and blackberry aromas are complemented forward spicy notes, together with caramel and vanilla characters from the long ageing in new oak barrels. On the palate, the wine has excellent balance. The tannins are both ripe and edgy, creating a smooth yet lively texture. The long finish features subtle, elegant fruit. This wine should age very well over the next ten years.
