Vintage Notes: Low yields and a long ripening period contributed to excellent wines with ripe flavours and tannins. An unusually cool, wet spring affected fruit set in most[br]varieties, reducing yields by about 20% to 30% compared to last year. In the Aconcagua Valley, Carmenère, Merlot and Syrah all had a good set.[br]Vineyard management was crucial this vintage: crop thinning and intensive leaf pulling helped the vines achieve full ripeness despite the late harvest.[br]To control excessive vigour, we restricted irrigation and grew cover crops to absorb[br]excessive soil moisture. The summer turned quite warm in early January, although intermittent cool spells slowed the harvest considerably. Most varieties ripened about two weeks later than normal, with the last blocks of Carmenère finally coming in during the first days of May.[br]Winemaking: The Syrah vineyards were harvested in late March and early April. The fruit underwent whole-berry fermentation at 18-30° Celsius, followed by an extended maceration. The length of the maceration period, which varied depending on[br]the development of the lots, averaged three weeks. The wine aged for twelve months in about half French and half American oak barrels (38% new). Clarification occurred naturally as the wine settled during ageing; it was then only lightly filtered at bottling.[br]Vineyard: The 2000 Max Reserva Syrah is from Sectors II and III of the Don Maximiano Estate in the Aconcagua Valley, a semi-desert region with hot summer days and cooling afternoon breezes. The eightyear- old Syrah vineyard is planted on a northwest-facing 5° slope with gravelly, sandy clay soils which drain very well. The vineyard is drip[br]irrigated, and intensive canopy management ensures excellent leaf surface area to crop load.[br]A portion of the blend was sourced from our E Ceibo Vineyard, also in the Aconcagua Valley, which features seven-year-old Syrah vines planted on stony soils.[br][br][br]Winemaker’s Comments Our 2000 Max Reserva Syrah features ripe blackberry[br]aromas set off by licorice, leather and freshly turned earth. On the palate, the toasty vanilla oak is well integrated with the ripe blackberry and plum flavours. Licorice and a touch of chocolate round out the flavours. Well-structured [br]tannins create an elegant mouth feel. This wine will probably peak about six years after vintage and then continue to age well for several more years.
