As he had just set up his own winery in Ellerstadt, which meant working non-stop, Markus had no time left to learn more about the wider world of wine outside his home country. But he is fast catching up now with the VET ROOI OLIFANT joint venture, which he established near Stellenbosch/South Africa in the Bottelary Hills, on the farm of his friend and fellow vintner Danie Steytler.
Together Markus and Danie are working on the KAAPZICHT ESTATE where the seasons are reversed; not far from Lion's Head and Table Mountain, Shiraz, Pinotage, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are thriving between powerful round rocks of granite that have been there for thousands of years; in the evening sun they look like enormous red elephants.
