This gin is undoubtedly one of the success stories of German distilling history - because a whole new movement of German gin started with it. Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin - together with the "Munich Duke" - was the starting point for a great number of German gin startups.
The Monkey 47 distillery is located between Lake Constance and the Black Forest. The monkey on the label was inspired from Air Force Commander Montgomery Collins, who helped build the Berlin Zoo in the 1950s and adopted a monkey. Later Collins opened the "Wild Monkey" in the Black Forest and sold his gin there - his recipe for Monkey 47 is based on. The myth that the 47 should stand for 47 botanicals persists - is that really the case? In any case, waht we know is that the alcohol content is 47%.
The bouquet of Monkey 47 could not be more local and "Black Foresty", because from the very first moment in the bouquet the connoisseur will be aware of various forest aromas such as pine and forest floor notes. What follows on the palate does the smell absolutely justice - the gin also oozes a wonderful lightness of citrus freshness.
