Pinotage is South Africa`s secret weapon. The grape variety was bred at Stellenbosch university in 1924 as a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault (known at the time as Hermitage) and is today almost only grown in South Africa. Pinotage is a typical New World wine and has great potential for development. Quite righly, Pinotage is about to become for South Africa what Shiraz is for Australia or Malbec is for Argentina - the country`s signature variety. Wine makers vinify the grape as single varietal wines and as blends. Pinotage shines as rosé wine as well.
Characteristic aromas are elderberry, pomegranate, blackberry, plum and cherry. Wines made from Pinotage often show a compact structure and mature tannins, smelling intensely of red and dark berries. Maturation in barriques produce aromas of chocolate, mocca, spices and vanilla.
