Description
bold & opulent
Tokaj Oremus Aszú 5 Puttonyos (0.5 L) is an elegant, intensely fruity and fresh sweet wine from Hungary`s famous Tokaj region, possessing an acidity which makes it a vibrant and yet velvety wine.
The Aszú wines combine tradition, innovation and excellence, with their roots in a unique terroir. They are an example of the rewarding of time, experience and knowledge. The production of Aszú wine (teardrop wine) is a meticulous process only possible in exceptional vintages and under particular climatic conditions which promote the development of "Botrytis Cinérea" (noble rot).
For hundreds of years it has been made in the same manner, adding to a "Gönc" barrel (136 litres) of must, 5 panniers (puttonyos) with 25 kg of noble Aszú berries. Aszú berries are macerated for two days until swelling and later gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in new Hungarian oak barrels; a slow process which can take up to two months.
Tokaj Aszú is the wine for which Tsar Peter the Great of Russia sent legions of Cossacks to watch over the wineries of Tokaj and the roads through which it was transported to St. Petersburg, where it was served at the table of Catherine the Great. Voltaire said of this wine, "This wine invigorates every fibre of my brain and, deep in my soul, produces a charming glint of intelligence and good humour".
